What caught your eye this week? Uncategorized Electro Ramblings

What caught my eye this week was…

David Manners, components editor:

French prime minister Jean-MarcAyrault attending the start of the Nano2017 programme at Crolles (pictured) demonstrating the French government’s commitment to the €3.5 billion project to which STMicroelectronics has committed €1.3 billion and the French government is contributing €600 million.

Steve Bush, technology editor:

The Ariane 5 launch of the Alphasat I-4A F4 satellite, a large part of which comes from the UK.  It’s the largest public-private space project partnership space project in Europe. It will increase Inmarsat’s L-band coverage.

How many times a day do we plug in a peripheral gadget or charger to a USB slot? For me it’s certainly enough times that you’d be entitled to expect me to be able to get it right at least as often as chance predicts, but no. So this little graphic, about four-dimensional space, “Cable does not enter slot” that’s circulating widely in the social media at the moment made me smile.

And while our own blogs have covered 3D printing’s potential, both in historical research and the dawn of its consumer potential, the national news also reminds us that any tool is only as good as the use you put it to, as German police prepare to investigate the risks inherent in making it possible to build pretty much anything you like.

I write the Eyes on Android blog so the release of Android 4.3 was the major event of the week, which is yet another “Jelly Bean”. I wonder how many major versions of Android will continue to share this label? Headline features include Bluetooth Smart support, restricted profiles for tablets (pictured right), support for accelerated 3D graphics, telephone number auto-completion, faster user switching, simplification of the Setup wizard, support for “surround sound” (via Fraunhofer Cingo) and additional language support.
