MEMS startup wins strategic investment
LONDON – Fabless inertial sensor vendor Qualtre Inc. (Marlborough, Mass.) has received a $3 million investment from a long-time, but undislcosed strategic partner. Qualtre said it has had a relationship with this partner for many years and that recent progress in the development of Qualtre's gyroscope sensor has stimulated the investment.
Qualtre uses bulk-acoustic wave (BAW) disks instead of the usual tuning-fork resonator used in most MEMS gyroscopes, technology that it licensed from the Georgia Institute of Technology. The company was also able to attract $10 million from venture capital firms Matrix Partners and Pilot House Ventures in July 2011. Qualtre is reported to have received a total of $36 million since its formation in 2008.
Qualtre, which is sampling MEMS gyroscopes to customers, said it would use the money for further development of its BAW sensor technology and create products for the mobile, automotive, and industrial markets. The BAW technology is said to show excellent performance in such areas as vibration immunity and drift. These features are good for a number of emerging applications including pedestrian navigation, location-aware service and optical image stabilization. The company claimed that the technology can drive a two-fold price/performance advantage over incumbent technologies in the high performance industrial and automotive markets.
"We are now showing the compelling value of our technology to key partners in multiple market segments, and they have been impressed and excited about the benefits it has in next-generation designs," said Edgar Masri, CEO of Qualtre, in a statement.
